Utrecht based Shoal aims to balance his techno sounds somewhere between rhythmic hypnosis and detailed soundscaping. He urges listeners to twitch out of their comfort zone and to really engage with his music. That is made all the more easy given that it is such inventive stuff.

First track ‘Sol Tans’ proves that with nine minutes of warm, muggy techno atmospheres that are pinned down by deep rolling kick drums. Up top, delicate little percussive slithers and sonar blips permeate the airwaves and the whole thing is perfectly shadowy and all consuming. ’Studsande’ is then a little more edgy and textured, with gothic synths crescendos and hulking great kick drums, alien sound designs and hypnotic pads all adding up to a pressurised cut that takes you deep down the rabbit hole. Last of all, ‘Malmo’ is a suspenseful and dark ambient track that sounds like a vast underground cavern. Slow but epic synth strings add real poignancy and the whole thing sucks you right into its core. This is a powerful EP from this emerging new artist.
